Featuring a river basin surrounded by mountains, the Noatak National Preserve has an entire ecosystem unaffected by human settlement. Backpacking through the preserve is one of the few ways to get around, but the harsh wilderness requires a high degree of self-sufficiency and experience with isolated areas. During the winter, dog sledding and skiing are great ways to explore the park, but the weather makes ample preparation an even bigger necessity. The designated wild and scenic Noatak River offers an eye-popping adventure for rafters, with pulse-pounding rapids and stunning natural surroundings. Wild animals including bears, wolves, moose and arctic foxes call the preserve home, as do massive herds of caribou, comprised of some 500,000 individual animals. Situated far from any large town or city, the national preserve is hidden away in Alaska's wild northwestern region.
Open daily year round. Kotzebue headquarters open Mon. - Fri. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
